Blog PostNew Equipment

We bought some new equipment today from KT's Orchard and Apiary (https://www.facebook.com/KTs-Orchard-and-Apiary-643133899090474/). A new bee suite for Kristy, since she has built up the courage to start helping me in the bee yard, and a new inner cover for the almost destroyed hive from a few days ago. We also picked up some "For Health w/ Essential Oils" to add to our bee feeder to help with building up the hive after their stressful tumble down the bank.

Blog PostEarly Morning Hive Emergency

Around 7:30AM, we get a call from our neice who lives next to our bee yard, the new hive was overturned and in the road! We had a strong wind storm over night, which had blown the hive over, since it was up on a bank (about 10-12ft high), it had rolled down the bank and was in the road. We threw on our clothes and headed to the bee yard to assess the damage to bees and hive.

Blog PostNew Hive Check

Stopped by the bee yard today and checked on the new hive. Didn't want to overly stress the bees after the move, so didn't actually dig into the hive. Plenty of workers moving in and out of the hive, some with pollen others not. Looks like they are doing fine, and have oriented to the new location well.

Blog PostNew Hive

Purchased a new hive today from a long-time beekeeper who is no longer able to take care of her bees. The hive was a Double Deep and full of bees and also purchased several Honey Supers and other supplies from her. We arrived at the beekeepers yard late evening and closed the hive with an entrance reducer, then proceeded to load the hive onto our truck abd secured it for transport to our bee yard.  Upon arriving at our bee yard, we proceeded to unload the hive and place it on the center of our stand.

Blog PostWinter Colony Death

This first entry will be short, due to its nature. Inspecting my 2 hives in late January, although we didn't open them up and go through them, hives seemed healthy. Didn't want to disturb them, had plenty of traffic in and out of the hive. Left them alone until the beginning of March, and decided to go into the hives to determine health during the first week of March. What we found was very disappointing, both colonies had perished.
